Of the 115 New Testament references to church or churches,1 nearly one hundred of them refer to the visible church(es). The biblical writers’ efforts were focused in that direction; after all, the invisible church is Christ’s spiritual body, which is His exclusive work,2 while the local visible church(es) are a work of Christ’s disciples on earth. The local churches’ number, nature, and purpose are the subject of this chapter.
